VAAL RIVER ESSAY

Much of my work looks at topography and how it is both a political and financial factor. Rivers, mountain ranges and other topographical features are not only physical barriers but can also divide cultures into nations and are used to separate the rich from the poor. Their influence on culture and identity is especially interesting in the South African society. Ownership and power of purchase have divided up the land in arbitrary ways especially concerning these topographical features. African history has been littered with massive tracts of land being divided and owned, both during the colonial times and as we see its history unfolding.

The work that you see in the Portfolio selection is from my VAAL ESSAY PROJECT. The Vaal is one of the biggest river and it runs through South Africa's wealthiest and most industrialized province; Gauteng. Johannesburg and Pretoria are both located here. The Vaal river  flows through both towns of leisure and luxury, poverty , industry and mining. The river not only devides the land but its people as well. How a river can physically mark segregation makes this a interesting area to have photographed in.
