BORDER/BOUNDARIES

My family escaped to South Africa in the early seventies where they lived as refugees until taking roots there. Mozambique was a Portuguese colony until then. With the end of the Salazar regime in Portugal, all colonies where abruptly freed. Without power succession plans, every single Portuguese  colony descended into civil war that lasted almost three decades. It's incredible how much blood was spilled over territory that was formed according to topographical features by distant European countries with no regards for its people or culture.

Irrespective of this I'm fourth generation African. My parents and grandparents where refugees from there birth place. These complexities inspired this project. I spent time photographing border towns in Mozambique.  These contested areas were and continue to remain areas where illegal immigration happens. This first chapter of my Border/boundary project  begins exploring why we continue to be obsessed about define ourselves according to landscapes. Why borders and boundaries seem more about containment of people other than keeping others out.
